Copywriting is the ability to write words to get people to give you money.
There was nothing harder for me than writing copy. I have never thought of myself as a good writer and in fact I left college once because I was worried I couldn’t write!
But since becoming an internet marketer, writing has become like a love affair for me. I have learned to find my voice in my writing and enjoy it now more than any other type of marketing. I’m going to share some of the things I’ve learned along the way in a relative short period of time.
When you are writing an article, web page, sales letter or anything else for that matter, you want to do three things:
- Target the right people
- Get their attention
- Keep their attention
First you’ll need to identify who the person is you want to communicate with. You have to get inside their head so to speak. To do this, you have to be authentic and write in your own voice. Don’t try and be someone else. Connect with people that are like you and from similar backgrounds. I connect with corporate executives, people in the MLM industry and small business owners. As well as married and divorced women and real estate sales people. Wow that’s a lot!
You want to create psychological relationships by knowing who you’re target audience is. Let them know you’ve walked their path and that you have arrived at where they want to be.
Identify with the pain people have and write about your own experience. You have to understand them and they have to know they are understood. Then they will believe you. From there they will make the psychological leap that you understand their pleasure too and you know how to get it.
Where you see competition that’s where the money is being made. Don’t let it scare you off, just stand your ground and allow your writing to stand out.
Lead with your target market’s problem. Think about what problems you had and illustrate them in your writing. Let them know you’re real and have experienced exactly what they have experienced.
Here are five things you can use to stand out:
- Question their beliefs. This gives their mind a hiccup. An example would be: You don’t have to do hotel meetings to sponsor people into your business.
- Be controversial. Be controversial without being negative or bashing people. An example would be: MLM doesn’t work anymore, do what I did. Use the National Enquirer to get ideas.
- Be entertaining – entertainment is a great way to attract people and is really why people buy stuff. They watch videos to be entertained, they read the emails to be entertained. Always relate anything in your marketing back to you. If it’s not entertaining to you – then how could you expect it to be entertaining to others?
- Be enlightening – Distribute revelations give new knowledge to people.
- Be curious – curiosity killed the cat but also made him pull out his wallet. People react for reasons that go beyond their interests. Questions are great ways to drive curiosity. An email subject example would be: I’m having trouble breathing…
Copy writing is the most powerful tool in your tool box as an internet marketer.
